YAYA (The Young Adult Book Club) Kicks Off A New Year of Good Reads

YAYA, the young adult book club of Alexander County Library, had its first meeting of the 2013-2014 school year on September 3. An awesome new group of oldies but goodies are back and some newbies as well. Looks like our group will be about 13 teens this year - a wonderful size. :)

If you are interested in reading along with the group, here are the novels of choice for this year. We try to read across as many genres as possible and we've added a new one this year. Dystopian - thank you, Hunger Games!

Nov - Every Day Life - Friction by E.L. Frank - It has one of the best quotes in a book I have ever read -

"I remember tracing the whole alphabet for weeks, not understanding that it was language under my touch, just winding lines scraping my fingertips. And then one day those lines turned into letters, and the letters turned into cat and pot and straw, and I could read. I could figure out the whole world."

That, my friends, gives me goose bumps!

Jan - Science Fiction - Taken by Edward Bloor

Feb - Romance - Scribbler of Dreams by Mary Pearson

Mar - Adventure (in a rock star kind of way) - Lemonade Mouth by Mark Hughes

Apr - Dystopian - Dust Lands: Blood Red Road by Moira Young

May - Classic - The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

We would really like to have read Marie Lu's Legend since we got to meet her at the National Teen Lock-in on August 2. Alas, that exciting book is on the NC Middle School Battle of the Books list and we didn't want to tie it up for the BOB competitors.

If you would like to READ (or hear) the YAYA opinion, keep an eye on this blog. We will try to have our discussions (with spoiler alerts so you can turn it off!) on video here. You are welcome to comment below and give us your own opinion as well.

Teen Poetry Happens kicks into gear on Tuesday, September 10 at 3:30 pm at Reformation Lutheran Church's fellowship hall. This is a new venue, but it is closer for the high school students to walk.  Cannot wait to get that party started as well.

Read on!
